Further details

On Saturday, as part of the UKUL and UKEOL, we are offering a two-part sprint around Trumpington. Built during the 2010s, this new housing development has a fantastic sprint offering: a quick, furious area, with an abundance of routechoice and sharp turns that force mistakes from runners.

The morning race will be held in Trumpington West. This area was last used for the BUCS relays in 2024. A previous version of the northern part of the map can be found here.

The afternoon race will be held in Trumpington East. This area has not previously been used for a competitive orienteering event, but is well-known amongst Cambridge locals for its technical orienteering, and is particularly well-suited to the dramatic chasing sprint format on offer on UKEOL courses 1 and 2 – first to the finish line wins!

Courses

Courses have been planned to have a winning time of 12–15 minutes. Provisional course lengths (optimum route) are as follows. It’s Cambridge; climb is negligible.

Junior Courses

Juniors on Course 6 (MW16, MW14) are permitted to race around both areas unaccompanied, but they are expected to exercise care and caution around these area, as expected for all urban orienteers. This course has been planned at the same technical difficulty as courses 1–5 (TD3). Regular traffic controls limit the speed of vehicles in this area, but competitors should expect to cross roads with light traffic use. Juniors MW12− wishing to run this course, must be accompanied by an adult (to remain competitive, the adult must do this after they have run).

Juniors on Course 7 (MW12−), will be taken into Trumpington Meadows (for the morning race) and Hobsons Park (for the afternoon race), exclusively away from roads. These areas are popular with wildlife and the public, and offer a great parkland sprint challenge for juniors. This course will be a TD2 (yellow course standard). Both parks will have a roaming marshal within for the duration of the junior courses.

Novices

We encourage beginners without any experience to enter course 7. We encourage beginners with some previous experience to enter course 5. Please consider choosing an earlier start time if you are a beginner or planning to walk around the courses.

Sunday 23rd. Huntingdon Urban and Elite Sprint Races

Further details

On Sunday we welcome orienteers to Huntingdon for classic urban orienteering, or a sprint race for UKEOL classes E1 and E2. Huntingdon, 20 miles NW of Cambridge, offers a fantastic technical challenge for orienteering. The area is comprised of three different urban styles. The courses start and finish in a classic 60s estate with intricate cut throughs, passages and routechoices that will test runners. As an old market town, the town centre is a challenging mix of narrow alleyways and irregular roads. Contrastingly, a final residential area completes the map, a chance for runners to open up their stride maybe, or is there a catch?

Elite races and junior courses will take place solely within the northern 60s estate; a cracking and intricate sprint area, forcing runners to be at the top of their game.

A previous version of the map can be found here.

Junior Courses

Both junior courses (6 and 7) remain within the residential estate; Course 7 (MW12−) does not require juniors to cross any roads, Course 6 (MW14 and MW16) requires older juniors to cross minor, residential dead-ends with very light traffic. Juniors are permitted to run unaccompanied for the course corresponding to their age class. We expect juniors to be diligent and exercise caution when crossing these roads. Course 7 is planned at TD2 technical difficulty, and Course 6 is planned at TD3.

Novices

We encourage beginners without any experience to enter course 7. We encourage beginners with some previous experience to enter course 5. Please consider choosing an earlier start time if you are a beginner, or planning to walk around the courses.
